First 5 Lex salutes Book Madness winner and community champions

First 5 Lex, a communitywide initiative that promotes school readiness, congratulated Lexington Fire Chief Kristin Chilton on winning its 2019 Book Madness. Her entry, which featured “Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes” and a couple dozen recruits, bested Liberty Elementary Principal Gerry Brooks and “The Velveteen Rabbit” in the finals of the video challenge, in which web viewers voted on their favorites. The final showdown reached nearly 30,000 people on social media and drew nearly 3,000 votes. Read more here.

PNC Foundation donates $100,000 for FCPS early childhood initiatives

The PNC Foundation is awarding a $100,000 grant to Fayette County Public Schools and a $50,000 grant to the Lexington Public Library as part of the 15thanniversary celebration of PNC Grow Up Great, the bilingual $500 million, multi-year initiative to help prepare children from birth to age 5 for success in school and life. The two-year grants are designed to support the specific needs of preschool learners by providing community-based educational experiences for families with young children or professional learning and skill development for current or future early childhood educators.
