First 5 Friday- ABC, What Do You Want To Be?

Happy First 5 Friday! Here is a great way to start off your weekend as you READ, TALK and PLAY with your little ones!


READ: Start off your weekend as you read “The ABCs of What I Can Be” by Caitlin McDonagh with your little ones! Do you have a child who has a big imagination about what they want to be when they grow up? Enjoy the memories you make with them as you read this book, learn the alphabet and talk about what they dream to be!

TALK: Take this time to talk to your little ones about what they want to be when they grow up and what they think about “The ABCs of What I Can Be” by Caitlin McDonagh.


Suggested questions to get the conversation started for all ages:

  • What do you want to be when you grow up?

  • What is your favorite job that you saw in “The ABCs of What I Can Be” by Caitlin McDonagh?

Suggested conversation questions about “The ABCs of What I Can Be” by Caitlin McDonagh for children ages 0-3:

  • What animals did you see in “The ABCs of What I Can Be” by Caitlin McDonagh?

  • Do you know someone who has any of the jobs listed in “The ABCs of What I Can Be” by Caitlin McDonagh?

PLAY Option 1: Play with your little one as they learn the letter K! K stands for kite. Your little one can learn the letter K as they create their own kite through the craft below!


K is for Kite:


Materials Needed:

  • 2 Sheets of White Construction Paper

  • Markers, Crayons, or Colored Pencils

  • Child Safe Scissors

  • Glue and/or Tape

  • 2 Sheets Colored Construction Paper (Choose Your Favorite Color!)

  • Ribbon or Yarn

How to Make Your Own K Kite:

  1. Help your child cut out the letter K with one of the pieces of white construction paper.

  2. With the second piece of white construction paper, help your child cut out a large diamond shape.

  3. Let your child decorate the cut-out shapes however they would like.

  4. Cut the ribbon or yarn into small pieces, about 1 - 2 inches long.

  5. Tape or glue the two pieces of construction paper together along the long-hand side of the paper.

  6. Tape or glue the diamond shape to the colored construction paper.

  7. Draw a squiggly line from the bottom of the diamond to the bottom of the colored construction paper.

  8. Tape or glue the cut ribbon or yarn along the squiggly line.

  9. Glue the sun in one of the top corners of the colored construction paper.

  10. Glue the K to the diamond shape.

  11. Enjoy your K Kite!
