First 5 Friday - What 5 Things Are You Thankful For?

Happy First 5 Friday! Here is a great way to start off your weekend as you READ, TALK and PLAY with your little ones!


READ: Start off your weekend as you read "Five Little Thank Yous" by Cindy Jin. What 5 things are you and your little one thankful for?

Suggested questions to get the conversation started for all ages:

  • What is kindness?

  • What acts of kindness have been important to you?

  • What is the best thing that happened to you today? Why are you thankful for this?

  • What are you thankful for that is in the book “Five Little Thank Yous” by Cindy Jin?

  • What fun colors did you see in the book “Five Little Thank Yous” by Cindy Jin? Can you show them to me?

PLAY: Play with your little ones as they create and play the thankful game!


Materials Needed:

  • Chopsticks, Paper Straws or Popsicle Sticks

  • 5 Different Colors of Markers

  • White Piece of Paper

  • Black Marker

How to Create the Thankful Game:

  1. Separate your chopsticks, paper straws or popsicle sticks into 5 sections.

  2. Color each section a different color.

  3. On your white piece of paper, draw a circle with each different color and color in the circle.

  4. Next to the color, use the black marker to write one thing to state that you are thankful for when that color is drawn.

  5. EX:

  6. Color 1: Name a food you are thankful for

  7. Color 2: Name a thing you are thankful for

  8. Color 3: Name a person you are thankful for

  9. Color 4: Name an animal you are thankful for

  10. Color 5: Name anything you are thankful for

How to Play the Thankful Game:

  1. Have someone draw a colored stick.

  2. Match the color of the stick to the color on the sheet of paper.

  3. State what you are thankful for that goes with the description of the color.

  4. Be thankful!
